Fl! 1

Viele Grüße [continued in left margin, written sideways, including signature and date:] von mir u. Lie-Liechen dir u. den deinen

Floriz, 1

A first sign of life from the wonderful summer's freshness, whose attractions I shall, gradually, unfold to you (This card is not even a courtyard). 2 At the same time, I have a favour to ask. Prof. Altmann from Berlin (State Library), points me in the direction of Hamburg and Leipzig with regard to Handel's keyboard works. I confess to be unable here to find out what sort of library in Hamburg might be deemed to be the rare owner of the first edition (1720) or an [early] copy. 3 If you can find this out, give me the address. Where are you and your family hiding? Have you already gone to the lakes. How are things with you? As I said, gradually ...

A thousand greetings [continued in left margin, written sideways, including signature and date:] from me and Lie-Liechen to you and yours,
[signed:] Your HS

Footnotes

1 Writing of this postcard is recorded in Schenker's diary at OJ 3/2, p. 2362, July 7, 1921: " An Floriz (Ansichtsk.): ersuche, in der Bibliothek der Händelausgabe nachzugehen." ("To Floriz (picture postcard): I request that he pursue the matter of the Handel edition in the library.").

2 "nicht einmal ein Vorhof" ("not even a courtyard"): by this expression, Schenker is saying that the postcard does not begin to express the charms of the place in which they are staying.

3 The date 1720 refers to the publication of the first book of Handel's keyboard suites. The project to edit the composer's collected keyboard music did not come to fruition.
